Summer is a great time for entertaining because everything can be done on a more laid-back and casual basis. There’s no need to whip up a fancy dessert when you can break out the ice-cream maker and get the kids engaged in some old time family fun. It’s a time to close the oven door and break out the grills – enjoy grilled fish, meats, poultry and produce and live large in your own backyard.
The beauty of summer entertaining is that you really don’t have to worry too much about what the house looks like because you can direct guests to the patio or deck. Casual seating and occasional tables are more conducive to eclectic seating arrangements and the kids can play in the yard or pool while you relax and enjoy some adult conversation. There’s not much to do in the way of washing up when you use disposable plates and utensils – there are also some interesting “green” reusable options made from bamboo or other natural materials if you are concerned about waste.
Summer is a great time to experiment with fruits and vegetables and you’d be amazed what you can turn out with a blender or a juicer. Enjoy nutritious homemade fruit smoothies and healthy vegetable drinks along with natural iced tea – it’s fun to try blending mint, pomegranate and other flavors to create your own special house beverage. Use fruit to make some natural unique and interesting sherbets which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
Plastic tablecloths make clean-up a breeze and it’s a good idea to have a wastebasket and a recycling bin on the deck or patio so there’s no need to bring trash back into or through the house.
